Living in Brazil

When we were shopping recently I found a book called Living in South Africa. I thought it would be a great way to learn about the country.

Oi! Brazil is a country in South America where more than 200 million people live! Brazil is the largest country in South America . Brazil borders every south american country besides Chile and Ecuador. Nearly what cover half of Brazil's land is rainforests. The rain forests have wild orchids and Jaguars! In the center if Brazil are the Brazilian Highlands. They are called highlanders because there are many mountains and hills. Besides Mountains there are also big cities. There are also a lot of big cities around Brazils coast. Infact Brazil has one of the longest coastlines in the whole entire world! Which is why people come all around to see the beach's. Rio de Janeiro has one of the worlds biggest. It goes on for 5 days. They have all sorts of fancy costumes and big parties. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia.  The whole city of Brasilia was built in 4 years. Sao Paulo is the largest city in all of Brazil. 20 million people live in Sao Paulo. Manaus is another city in Brazil except a lot smaller and is located  North in the Amazon rain forest. Mangroves are a huge part of Brazil. Mangroves are tree's that have very thick roots. There roots are so thick that when the ocean washes over them they do not get washed away.

Food: For breakfast or any time of the day you can have Brazilian cheese balls. They are so good but have a weird consistency.  Rice, Beans and fish is a fairly typical thing to eat. In Brazil people eat dinner very late. Around 9 o'clock some people have beans, vegetables and sausage over rice.

History: Native Brazilians have lived here for at least 11 thousand years. Many of the Native Brazilians still have the same tradtions they did over 100 years ago. 1500 Portuguese explorer Pedro Cabral landed on the coast of Brazil. He claimed the land for Portugal and the rest of Europe. The Setters made the  the native Brazilians their slaves and brought even more slaves from Africa. The Native Brazilians and African slaves were forced to grow crops on enormous farms for the people in Portugal. As more time past more slaves from Africa and Brazil were forced to work for free. Thankfully slavery in Brazil was coming to an end when the prince of Portugal was given control of Brazil. He said that was free to be it's own country and did not have to be owned by Portugal and the rest of Europe. And in 1888 the prince of Portugal's granddaughter made a law that made it illegal to have slaves or be one. Everybody was free! Through 1958 and 1070 soccer player Pele won Brazil 3 world cups!
